We are pleased to announce our 2012 Civility Award Recipients:

Mary & Craig Root                               Markashia Lucus

A very special part of the April 5, 2012 Symposium was the presentation of the Coalition for a Better Community’s Annual Civility Awards. Mary and Craig Root received the 2012 Civility Award. Jim Gant, St. Mary City Councilman, presented the award stating, “It is my pleasure tonight to recognize and acknowledge two individuals who model the principals of civility every day and who evoke the best from each of us. Mary and Craig Root were among the earliest leaders to join our Coalition. If you drive down Osborne Street and pass their business you will see our “Practice Civility” sign prominently displayed in their window. And it doesn’t stop there. They designed and displayed, at their own expense, a billboard with the message, “Practice Civility Everyday—Start an Epidemic.” This single act has done more to advance our organization’s message to citizens of Camden County that any other activity.”
The Junior Civility Award went to Markashia Lucas, Mamie Lou Gross Elementary School student. Councilman Gant stated “Tonight we are honoring one of the students who after both being the victim of bullying and also witnessing a friend and fellow student be bullied, showed the courage to stand up to bullying. She went to the school counselor, Renee Spencer, who gave her assistance in starting a club to educate other students to increase awareness of the very harmful effects of bullying. On behalf of the Coalition it is my pleasure to recognize an amazing young 5th grader who is modeling civility in her class and in her school.”
